Homeschooling is just THAT important

27 February 2011

I'm sure most of you have heard about the Wisconsin protesting going on over the past several weeks regarding Governor Walker's determination to cut the budget by approving restrictions on union collective bargaining rights.  Seems a piece of it went through but still more is needing to be voted but is stalled because of the Democrats bailing on their jobs.  It is said that more than 70,000 people are showing up daily to either show their support or their opposition despite freezing temperatures here in the north!!

But I'm not going to blog today on what's happening down in Madison.  It only spurred a conversation between my husband and I concerning laws that have huge affects on families. What would happen if - our state would try to push through anti-homeschooling laws?  Especially laws stating that it would be illegal.  (Heaven forbid that never happens)  But what if?  How would we respond?  We've talked about it in the past and our solutions remain the same.  We would leave the state.  Leave home, friends and loved ones, connections that we cringe at having to give up; like our raw milk!  (That's huge in itself!)  Even in these trying economic times our job; or at the very least the kids and I leaving and daddy staying on to work.  That would mean living in our camper somewhere warm!  The sacrifices would be great. Either no job, or life without daddy.

It's about sacrifices.  Sacrifices that we have made for over 23 years.  Because homeschooling our children is that important.  It always has been.  Sacrifices are never easy.  Thats why they're called sacrifices.  But this one, to us, is that important.  I could have thrown it in same as anybody else.  Back in the day when we were pretty much the only family homeschooling for miles around, hardly any curriculum to choose from, support groups, books on homeschooling, blogs, etc. we plowed on.  My life was no different than anybody else's.  I have laundry, cooking, cleaning, contentious children, shopping and running errands with many children in tow, vacuuming, social events, children's activities, church work, me time, (I do try!) date nights;  all those things that a family does.  All those things but in double or even triple overdoses compared to most!  Okay, this is not a humble brag.  I'm only saying that homeschooling is that important.  It's something we do.  The reasons for all of us vary but it is something we have chosen to do.  Even more than a commitment.  But a way of life.  Because in the words of my sister-in-law who is homeschooling 5 young children, "It is hard, everyday I think why am I doing this?  But then I remember, there is no other alternative, no other choice, and it has to be this way and we keep moving forward."  I'm with you Denise.  There is no other choice. No, homeschooling is not a commandment.  But, there are commandments on how we are to raise them and what we are commanded to teach them.   And it is for those reasons that there is no other alternative.  That's why we do, that's why we continue to do it.

We are often asked, well mostly me, "Don't you ever wish you could be doing something else with your time?  Like shopping, alone, crafting, a part time job, more reading, more bath time, more quiet time?"  Yes and no are usually my answers.  Yes, I'm human.  I like quiet, a home that stays clean longer than 5 minutes.  I'd curl my hair, put on some make up, read my scriptures, go shopping, join a fitness club, visit friends, ensure time to brush my teeth,  (Maybe brushing the teeth was overkill, that does get done!)  In order to achieve our goals, there has to be sacrifices.  Because it's just that important.

Is your cup running empty?

He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater;
He sendeth more strength when the labors increase.
To added affliction he addeth His mercy;
To multiply trials, His multiplied peace.

When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
When we reach the end of our hoarded resources,
Our Father's full giving is only begun.

His love has no limit; His grace has no measure.
His pow'r has no boundary known unto men.
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.! Annie Johnson Flint

Do you sometimes get weighed down with the many cares of the day? I know I do. Time keeps moving and children keep growing. I need to be at my best for my family and overwhelming myself with "things" takes from that and adds stress to my life. Stress gets in my way and then I'm not able to focus on the things that are most important. When those weighty moments come visiting I know for sure at least these two things are needful.

1. Obviously, I have bitten off more than I can chew and it is now time to cut back and simplify.
2. The most important, ponder and pray. Turn to the Lord and He will be my strength.

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasures in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong."~ 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Weekends are for.....

14 February 2011

Sippies-because we broke our normal record of only 1 cup of milk being spilled at dinner to 4! So I announced that EVERYONE from now on were going to use sippies to which peals of laughter filled the air. (they don't think I'm serious, but tomorrow I'm going sippy shopping since I currently don't have enough to go round!) I think serving chocolate milk instead of plain milk or water had them a little too excited!

Praying for wisdom is a must....

13 February 2011

at least for me anyway! "In Gibeon the Lord appears to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, "Ask what I shall give thee?" 1 Kings 3:5 "And now, oh Lord my God, thou hast made my servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in." vs 7 "Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?" vs 9 "And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing." vs 10

I can only speak for myself here. I too know not how to go out or come in. I too need to ask for the wisdom and the understanding that only God can give me. As I begin yet another new year in our homeschool I am again looking for the path the Lord would have each of my children take both in their curriculum and in their everyday lives. The many questions and concerns once again bring me to prayer. To ask the Lord what is that He would have my children learn and how He would have them learn it. Each of our children are different and that calls for a customized lifestyle of learning for each one. In our home we have children who have strengths in reading, but perhaps not in math. A strong skill in hands on activities but not in creative writing. And so on!! Each one of these children are arrows in the hands of our Father. It is our responsibility as 'children' and parents that we seek God through prayer and ask for His plan for our children in the coming new year. Only He knows them best, only He knows their path, and only He can direct them using us as His vehicle. "For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding."~Proverbs 2:6 "Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."

Two conversations that went south in a hurry!

09 February 2011

I was upstairs readying children for bed while at the same time tidying up when I had a question.  There were a pile of curlers in a pile on my floor I was picking up when one of the twins walked into my room.  Only using my peripheral vision I was certain of which twin it was.

Mom-"Kaydee, do you know where the plastic bag is that these curlers go in?"

Twin-"Emma"

Mom-"Oh, Emma knows?"

Twin-"NO, Emma."

Mom-"I know Emma knows, ask her?"

Twin-"NOOOOO, I'm Emma!"

A conversation with Mary~~

Upon entering the bathroom I noticed there were a pair of underpants in the toilet.  Mary was in the other room wrestling with daddy.

Mom-MARY NOWELLE!  Come to the bathroom.

I heard daddy say in a small voice, "Uh oh, she used the middle name."

Mary came in the bathroom and asked what I needed.  I said, "Mary, did you throw that underwear into the toilet?"

Mary-"I don't know, ask who!"

Mom- "I am asking who, I'm asking you!"

Mary-"But please ask who again, ask "who" to all the people and not just me!"

Wordless Wednesday~Did I say I love my boys?

Celebrating a birth and a birthday 1600 miles from home!

07 February 2011

We are home once again. (Arriving late Sunday evening) Here are some highlights of our trip to Colorado to welcome the birth of another baby and to celebrate another birthday!! Our daughter Juli is the mama of this lovely child and also the amazing photographer who took the first 5 photos of her little darling's very first photo shoot!! (Ambreigh Christina)

Celebrating Juli's birthday February 1st. Just days after her delivery of Ambreigh. I know I've said it before but I'll say it again. Juli is a fabulous wife and mama. She is very spiritual and every time I spend time with her I always leave uplifted by her sweet spirit. Not to mention having learned a thing or two. She teaches her children of the Savior and they are indeed hungry to learn of Him thanks to the teachings they get from their mama. Did I say she manages to keep a perfectly clean and orderly home? We all love you tons Juli and hope your birthday was fabulous and not overwhelming with so many of your siblings hanging around. You are wonderful my dear girl.

We didn't have nearly the amount of snow in Colorado (below) as we did when we got back home to Wisconsin (above) The difference~Wisconsin snow will be here until April or May while Colorado's snow will disappear much sooner!

101 Reasons as to why I homeschool

04 February 2011

Reason 87

"I don't know how you can homeschool all those kids, I only have 3 and I can hardly make it through summer break. Come September I am so ready to send them back and get them out of the house."

If I had a dime for every time I hear comments like this I would be the most monetarily richest woman in the world!! And usually the only I can say is, "Oh, how much you miss."

"We should understand that teaching our children is our delight, our joy, our opportunity. When we see spending time with them as a burden, rather than a joy, we see further evidence of how encultured we have become. Children, biblically speaking, are a blessing from God. And we ought to seek out time with blessings from God, not plot out ways to avoid them, or hand them over to others."~R.C.Sproul When You Rise Up

I feel one of the greatest blessings I have been given are the gifts of my children. Sure, we all have those days when life is tough. The kids are loud, contentious, moody, energetic, dirty, smelly, etc. But overall, count it all joy when you can spend your days with your little ones!!
