Garden of the Heart

30 July 2009

The life of each one is a little garden which he is to dress
and keep. In an ancient Bible song the story of such a garden
is told. It is not some other one's garden we are to keep, but our own.

Is there not need that we pray this prayer continually: "Awake, O winds of God,
and blow upon the winter locked garden of my heart that the chilled life in it may flow out?"

Some of us find it easier to look after the gardens of our neighbours
than our won little patch. But that is not our duty.

We should keep it always

clear of weeds and full of sweet and beautiful plants and flowers.

A garden spot anywhere is not only a thing of beauty but is also a blessing

to all who see it.

It should make our lives so beautiful that it will redeem one spot of the world from

dreariness and transform it into loveliness.

We should keep it always

clear of weeds and full of sweet and beautiful plants and flowers.

A garden spot anywhere is not only a thing of beauty but is also a blessing

to all who see it.

It should make our lives so beautiful that it will redeem

one spot of the world from

dreariness and transform it into loveliness.

"Go make thy garden fair as thou canst; Thou workest never alone;

Perchance he whose plot is next to thine will see it, and mend his own." jrmiller

A Merry Mary Moment!!!

I have heard of people passing out while "drinking" a little too much but
never while eating!! This is something I am certain that I could not do. Honestly,
how many have you have passed out while in the middle of eating?  One of those
things that only a child can pull off!!   She's still holding the crackers in her hand!!
One of the older kids stuck a cracker on her chest just for the "effect!"  The child
even had cracker crumbs coming out of her mouth when dad picked her up to carry
 to bed.

Happy Sweet 16 Aaron

28 July 2009

Aaron turned 16 on the 26th of July.  Where does the time go.  What our home would be like without him is a scary thought!!   He loves being with his daddy and as a result has learned many things at his side.  Aaron is going to make a fine husband and father someday because his heart is huge, his hands are strong, and his spirit willing.  Love you so much Aaron.

A Busy Couple of Days

22 July 2009

This has been quite a busy week for us.  We made jars and jars of apricot/pineapple jam, blueberry jam, and zucchini cake and bread. Our garden is being very generous this year with zucchini!!  The children were dumping jam on pancakes this morning and on their zucchini bread. They love to smear it on crepes, french toast, and muffins.  I hope I made enough!!  The zucchini cake is at it's best when the wheat is freshly ground making it light and fluffy.  I managed to salvage about 1/2 gallon cream from my milk batch and made a huge bowl of butter which is perfect topped on warm zucchini bread.

Apricot Pineapple Jam

5 cups crushed apricots

1 can crushed pineapple

5 cups sugar

1 box sure jell

Stir in fruit and sure jell, cook to boiling, then add sugar and boil one more minute.  Freeze or bottle

Blueberry Jam

9 cups crushed berries

5 cups sugar

heat until thick and pour into jars and seal or freeze

The Last Hours

18 July 2009

We are ever coming to last things, things we shall never meet again.
Now it is the last hour of our day, the day, which came to us new
and clean in the morning,

Which we have spent well or ill, and which, however, we have spent it,
we cannot live over again.

Childhood has it's last hour. Childhood is the great sowing-time of life.

Seed should then be sown in the tender soil, seeds that will grow
into beautiful things in the after years.

This is the parents' opportunity.

While it lasts love should be alert to pour into the young mind and heart
the germs of all true and beautiful things.

Childhood has its last hour; then the veil drops and we are done forever
with that period of life.

It never will come to us again.

My Princesses Three

These 3 little girls of mine were playing princess dress up and I couldn't resist snapping some photos. They grow up so fast that I must savor these moments!!

Mary's Treasure Hunt

13 July 2009

The funniest thing a bit ago.  Mary came to me and asked me where the mate was to her red shoe. I ask, now am I really going to know where that is?  Honestly, how many little shoes are there in this house.  I'm sure it could be almost anywhere!!  Well, off she went on her shoe hunt and returned a while later with a second show.  Hardly the one she wanted earlier but I suppose it works!!  Blessings of a 3 year old never end!!

Dinner With Obama

10 July 2009

Once upon a time, I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a free country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws. My wealth was earned honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor.

I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner.

The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate, and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.

"Sorry about that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry."

"I don't appreciate.. ." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp.

"And his brother Eric is very thirsty." said the President.

I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I
thought. I will play along. I don't want to seem unkind. My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite.

"Eric's children are also quite hungry."

With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room.

"And their grandmother can't stand for long."

I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool.
Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President.

"Their grandfather doesn't like the cold."

I wanted to shout- that was my coat! But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport. I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn't moved or
spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him.

"Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven't planned for retirement, and they need a house. They recently defaulted on a sub-prime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do."

My hands were shaking. I felt faint. I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops.

"By the way," He added, "I have just signed an Executive Order
nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars."

I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his Creme Brulee. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us.

What had I done wrong?

As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands.

"You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said.

An email I copied and pasted that has been going around.  A thought provoking question, are we slapping his little fingers every time he takes something off our plate?

Happy Birthday Gregg

05 July 2009

video
Today we celebrated Christie and Gregg's birthday.  Christie was feeling quite a bit better and ready for cake and ice cream since having her wisdom teeth pulled.  Today Gregg turned 14.  Where does the time go?  Gregg is our 3rd boy.  What a blessing he is to us and to his brother Aaron just older than him.  They feel quite lucky being born 'together' in this pottage of girls and as their parents it has been great to see them turn into best friends.  Gregg is extreme joker and makes everyone laugh at his antics.   Very helpful and very true to his faith.  What a great blessing you are Gregg to our family.

Cherry Pie Filling

04 July 2009

The girls and I spent part of the 4th making cherry pie filling. We had a huge box of cherries that needed to be pitted and our 13 year old son offered to do the job of pitting for a soda. Hello........ of course I'll take him up on that offer. After the pitting was finished the girls and I did the rest of it. It turned out yummy. Here is the recipe.

2 cups cherries
1/2 c. water
cook cherries and water for 10 minutes and add the following until thick.
1/2 c. sugar
2 T. corn starch
we added some cinnamon to ours. The recipe above is for one batch. Not sure how much that would make but we kept doubling until we were done with cherries. We ended up with 12 pints. After putting hot filling in pint jars, seal and put in boiling water bath for 20 minutes.
