On Learning Geography

Emma uses our Geo Safari along with our normal globe that happens to have bigger writing on it helping her to answer the questions more quickly!!

I've always loved Geography. Ever since 5th grade when we got to learn the locations of the many countries on the map, their capitals and major cities includes. But I have found that I had forgotten so much. But in the last several years I've gotten an opportunity to learn it again. (Isn't homeschool great!) We have 2 items that are the basis of our geography curriculum. In fact, I've learned that these 2 teaching tools can pretty much stand alone. One is the ever famous GEO SAFARI and the other is the cd entitled GEOGRAPHY SONGS. I am amazed at how much fun geography actually can become to kids when they use these. Learning has never been so easy as it is these days!! And not to mention the fact that they love it! It's one subject they just pick up and do without any cajoling from me!!

What good ideas!! WE love geography. For years and years we've had maps up by our kitchen table. Every time are in there we use them. Geography is just as natural as eating, talking or walking for us. I love the pictures. You have two globes, you should have the twins both in there too :-)

We loved Geography songs. That is how my oldest learned best; through song. We can remember some of the songs now and he is almost 18.

My daughter absolutely LOVES geography, but is just like her mum - she doesn't like history one little bit. I had such trouble remembering dates, and my mum used to walk me and hit me until I remembered them - probably the reason that I hated it with a passion. :( I remembered crying that I wanted to go home to Nanna - my nan was GREAT!

With my daughter, I don't concentrate on getting the dates correct - just as long as she understands about the time period that it is in. I don't want to make her school life unbearable. :)

Have a wonderful and blessed week,
Jillian

neat idea! Carolyn and the boys have been working through the Classical Conversations geography this year, which is mostly ancient map stuff
