Health Benefits of Consuming Beans

Our family goes through a lot of beans but I don't think I've ever made a post about the benefits of them. I thought of that today when we were having our meal of pinto beans, potatoes, and cornbread. I would like to share with you more reasons to incorporate beans into your diet other than the great taste.

They are very high in protein and can help bring you to good health. Some of the healthy benefits are that beans help prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and help keep your weight in check. Those are some very valid reasons right there for eating more beans. But there is more. In a study reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine, men and women who consumed legumes 4 times a week had a 22% lower risk for heart disease. And, in another study by the Journal of Nutrition found that eating beans and potatoes regularly could help prevent breast cancer. While all of these reasons are good ones, I find the best reason to eat them is because of cost!! Feeding a large family can be costly but I get more bang from my buck when I put beans and potatoes on the table!!

My husband taught the kids a wonderful (sarcasm) about beans because we also consume a lot of beans. I think it's a lot easier to eat them when you know how to prepare them. For years I didn't know how. Once I learned I was able to cook them all the time~ We love ours with homemade tortillas :-) Double yum!

What are your favorite bean recipes?

Does your family experience negative digestive side effects from eating beans? :)

Beans are cheap, but they do have their drawbacks! ;)

Yum. We eat a lot of the refried, and in chili. I'd be interested in seeing your recipes too! (That cookbook is in my car, and I should have it with me this Sunday to return. Sorry it's taken so long to get it back to you!)
